A computer enthusiast from a young age, I went to college with intentions of working in that industry however I initially ended up turning one of my other passions – music – into a career. During college I started teaching and over the years eventually grew it to a business employing several tutors. As a business owner one of the many things I had to do, other than the actual teaching, was marketing – and I used my computer skills to create a website and back-of-house management system to run the business on (which at this point had over 150 students and 10 staff).
I soon realised I enjoyed developing websites and web systems more than the teaching, so I started freelancing and doing contract work on the side of my teaching. I cut my teeth working direct for local businesses and contracting at large corporations such as Skandia.
After a couple of years freelancing I sold my company and went back into the tech world full-time, working at VT Education and Skills (now owned by Babcock) developing web-based careers software for 3 years. Redundancy unfortunately meant I moved on, this time to a digital and creative agency – servicing whichever client shouted loudest in this fast-paced, quick-turnaround environment for 6 years. During my time at White’s (now 21six) I again developed an in-house CRM system for managing the clients, projects, studio and HR among other things.
Now in 2016, my enthusiasm for working on back-of-house systems rather than one-off projects led me to look around for local companies who develop such software and I found Really Simple Systems who fortunately were recruiting at the time – now here I am! Working on a large-scale system again is really exciting and the team here is fantastic, I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.
Outside of work I enjoy taking my dog for walks, playing computer games and catching up on films/TV – and of course playing music!
